Kayaking in the Drake's Estero
A day-long excursion with Claire Peaslee & Point Reyes Adventure Co.
Saturday September 19, 2026
9am – 3pm

Join us for this very special experience of the wonder and beauty of Drakes Estero on
a kayaking excursion co-sponsored by Point Reyes Adventure Co. and In Place.
Our journey -- beginning at the estero's upper reaches and where it meets and melds with
the ocean -- will be guided by the masterful and dynamic duo of Liz Wilhelm and
Dallas Smith, co-owners of Point Reyes Adventure Co. In company with local naturalist
and narrator, Claire Peaslee, we will deepen our intimacy with place.
During our time together we will explore the ways this landscape and waterscape hold a
story – or in truth, many stories. As we paddle and pause along the way, we open our
senses, hearts and minds, attuning to the various rhythms and patterns enveloping us.
We connect with the presences that make up this place – her pristine tidal bays,
sculpted shorelines, and myriad of creatures: birds, fishes, seals, plants, and
invertebrates. We sense and honor the living memories of First Peoples whose lives
have intertwined with this place across millennia and into the present.
Immersive exploration of this beautiful estuary promises to bring new knowledge. It
opens channels of insight: a sense of belonging. To cross its waters and touch remote
shores is to learn on multiple levels. We notice phenomena and sensations. We enter
into accord with Earth rhythms and energies. And each voyager deepens a personal
relationship with place. Particular elements of the experience go home with us, into our
lived lives. In this way we become part of the estero’s unfolding story, and she becomes
part of our personal geography – our "Earth story."
Think of this day as a blessing, a gift, and a ceremony of reciprocity and gratitude. Like
all of Earth, Drakes Estero is generous. As we visit and experience her beauty and
bounty, we reciprocate with expressions of our own, finding ways to bring forth our
gratitude for the timeless gifts of this day, this journey, this place.
The cost – $225 – includes all equipment, expert guidance, a delicious lunch, and deep conversation.
